This particular Chod drum has been made by a former Buddhist monk and follows all requirements for this particular kind of sacred object. Mantras have been stuck with great care inside the drum shell.  Goat skin has been used on this particular drum, giving it a distinct tone and character. The outer shell is made from high quality Bhutanese burl wood with a natural finish, and has been turned with great care and skill. This Damaru comes ready to play with a handle and tail, as well as a carry bag.

The Damaru is often used in Buddhist rituals as a sound offering.  Its hourglass shape and resonating drumheads, signifies the union of wisdom and compassion - the very essence of Buddhist enlightenment. During Chöd rituals, the rhythmic beat of the Damaru helps practitioners transcend the ego, and summon benevolent spirits as they offer their own bodies as a symbolic feast. Chod drums are usually played by practitioners/students that have taken an initiation into this practice. Others might keep them in their shrine as a sacred object/offering.
