How to Listen to a Singing Bowl Video Before You Buy

A singing bowl can look beautiful in a photograph, but its sound is often what makes you want to keep playing it. When you’re choosing online, a video helps you hear more than the first note. It lets you notice how the sound develops, how long it lasts and whether you enjoy listening to it.

There’s no single “best” sound for everyone. Here’s a simple way to listen to a few bowls and work out which one feels right for you.

Listen to the whole sound, not just the first strike

Press play and notice the first sound you hear when the bowl is struck. Is it bright and clear, soft and mellow, or deep and resonant?

Then keep listening. Some bowls reveal higher, shimmering tones around the main sound. These are often called overtones. You don’t need to identify musical notes to appreciate them. Ask yourself whether the different sounds sit together in a way you enjoy.

Finally, listen as the sound fades. Does it seem to linger? Does it change as it gets quieter? That last part can be just as appealing as the initial strike.

Compare bowls under the same conditions

Phone and laptop speakers can make a bowl sound thinner than it does in person, especially at lower pitches. If you can, use the same headphones or speakers, at roughly the same volume, when comparing videos. Avoid making your choice from a few seconds of audio on one device and a full video on another.

Try listening to two or three bowls in one sitting. Make a quick note of what you like: perhaps “warm,” “clear,” “low,” or “long-lasting.” Your own words are more useful than trying to find a technically perfect bowl.

Think about how you want to use it

For a quiet personal practice, you might be drawn to a sound you’re happy to hear again and again. If you plan to play with other instruments, you may want to compare how different bowls’ tones fit alongside them.
