How to Tell Quality in a Singing Bowl

Not sure how to choose a quality singing bowl? Learn what to look for, from sustain and overtones to hand-hammering, and shop our range of authentic Tibetan singing bowls online.

1. Good Sustain and Powerful Vibration

A high-quality singing bowl should resonate long after you strike it - this is called sustain. But sound is only part of the experience. When you play the bowl close to your body, you should feel its vibrations moving through you. This physical connection between the bowl and player is one of the defining characteristics of a truly well-made Tibetan singing bowl, and central to its use in meditation, relaxation and sound healing.

2. Rich Overtones

One of the most extraordinary qualities of a fine singing bowl is its capacity to produce overtones - multiple notes sounding simultaneously to create a layered, resonant soundscape. The richer and more distinct these overtones, the greater the craftsmanship behind the bowl. If a bowl produces a flat, single-note tone, it's likely machine-made and of lower quality. We put videos up for every singing bowl up so that you can hear the overtones that these instruments very produce. Many of our bowls produce multiple overtones in addition to the high note listed on our website.

3. Easy to Ring and Responsive

A quality Tibetan singing bowl should respond readily to your touch, whether struck with a mallet or played with a friction technique. It should produce a clear, full sound with minimal effort - an important quality for beginners finding their technique, and for practitioners who use bowls in extended meditation or healing sessions.

4. Hand-Hammered Construction

Many of the finest singing bowls are hand-hammered by skilled artisans. Because no two hammer strikes are identical, each hand-hammered bowl develops its own unique tonal character — something a machine-made bowl simply cannot replicate. The hammering marks visible on the surface aren't just aesthetic; they're a sign of authentic craftsmanship and contribute directly to the bowl's sound complexity.

5. Age

Like most musical instruments, Tibetan singing bowls tend to improve with age as the metal settles and the resonance deepens. That said, be cautious of bowls marketed as antiques. For us, an antique must be at least 100 years old and genuinely antique singing bowls are exceptionally rare and difficult to source.
