Octaves: What A3 vs A4 Actually Means
The number after the note letter refers to the octave — the register in which that note sits.
- Lower numbers (A2, C3, D3) indicate deeper, slower vibrations. These bowls tend to be larger, with a full, grounding sound that you feel as much as hear. They work well for body-centred practices, deep relaxation, and group settings where the sound needs to carry.
- Higher numbers (A4, C5, D5) indicate higher, faster vibrations. These bowls are typically smaller, with a bright, clear, penetrating tone. They suit focused meditation, mental clarity work, and personal practice.
As a general rule: the larger the bowl, the lower the octave. A 20 cm bowl and a 12 cm bowl both listed as "note A" will sound quite different — the larger bowl will be A3 or lower, the smaller one A4 or higher.

432 Hz vs 440 Hz: Does It Matter?
You'll encounter this question if you spend any time in sound healing communities, and it's worth a straightforward answer.
440 Hz is the international standard tuning reference, used in most modern music. 432 Hz is an alternative tuning that some practitioners and researchers believe feels more natural, more harmonious with the body, and more aligned with natural frequencies.
For Tibetan singing bowls, this debate is somewhat beside the point. Hand-hammered bowls are not manufactured to a tuning standard — each bowl is individually hammered and its frequency is measured, not designed. A bowl listed at 432 Hz simply happens to vibrate at that frequency. It isn't tuned to 432 Hz in the way a guitar string would be. Note that these bowls cannot be hammered to set frequencies either and that finding a bowl of any particular frequency is pure luck!
That said, if you feel drawn to a bowl at or near 432 Hz, follow that instinct. The difference between a bowl at 430 Hz and one at 436 Hz is unlikely to determine the quality of your practice. What matters far more is the richness of the overtones, the sustain of the sound, and how the bowl feels in your hands.
