Thangkas are Himalayan paintings that depict various Buddhist deities as described in the canonical texts. Mahakala is a fierce, wrathful figure in Buddhism. A powerful embodiment of compassion and a fierce protector of the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), he is considered a Dharmapala – a guardian deity.
His terrifying appearance, adorned with skulls and wielding weapons, symbolizes his ability to cut through illusions and obstacles on the path to enlightenment. He is venerated and invoked to remove obstacles, bring about deep transformation, and ultimately help practitioners progress on their spiritual journey.
For Buddhists, Mahakala's wrath is compassionate. He battles against our inner demons, such as ignorance, anger, and greed.
