Thangkas are Himalayan paintings that depict various Buddhist deities as described in the canonical texts. Vajrapani is a prominent bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism, particularly revered as a protector and guide of Gautama Buddha. He is often depicted holding a vajra (thunderbolt), which symbolizes the Buddha's power and strength, and is associated with the suppression of negative forces and the protection of Buddhist teachings. He is one of the three great Bodhisattvas, together with Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig, Guanyin) and Manjushri, who respectively represent “power of Buddha,” Compassion of Buddha, and Wisdom of Buddha.
The presence of Vajrapani can hopefully be seen in our daily lives. Whether it's the inner voice encouraging us to meditate instead of watching TV, or the feeling of guilt when passing a homeless person without helping, Vajrapani's influence is ever-present, guiding us towards compassion and mindfulness.
A thangka like this is considered a most auspicious gift to give to someone to mark a significant milestone (wedding, new venture, new home, etc).
