The Shang is a flat, upturned handbell used by followers of the Bon religion as well as Shamans in Tibet. This particular piece is modelled on the Shang bells found in ancient Tibet.
The bell is decorated with replica amber and coral which are believed to offer protection, and therefore commonly used in Tibetan jewellery. It is attached to streamers in five colours representing the five elements. Bells like these were probably used to invoke spirits of the land in various rituals and clear negative energies. The Shang is most commonly used with the Phurba in various rituals.
